What To Do When You’re Snowed In?

The weather outside may be frightful, but you can still make it delightful! Snowstorms can be a big inconvenience but there are ways to turn your snow day into a day of fun, adventure and relaxation. Next time you and the family are snowed in, try one of these activities to keep the mood delightful and fun:

When you’re buried in snow it may seem like you’re trapped, but take it as an opportunity for a new, seasonal sport. The lakes are frozen and the fish are fresh - go ice fishing! If you’re a newbie to the sport, no problem! Runnings has you covered- check out our Ice Fishing Guide for more information on what all you’ll need to get started!

Fresh snow means fresh ammo… for a snowball fight! If you can head outside, go and enjoy the snow by engaging in a friendly snowball fight. Bring the whole family out or invite friends over so you can split into teams for the fight. Build fortresses to hide behind, create an incredible supply of snowballs and work together to take the down the other team. Snowball fights are a staple of snowy days! Just make sure to stay bundled up, hydrated and aware of potentially slick spots. Invest in some good winter gear like this Ariat Men’s Waterproof Jacket, Carhartt Flannel Lined Jacket, or these Winter Boots for the kids.

When life gives you lemons you make lemonade; when life gives you snow you make snow-ice cream. Who doesn’t love ice cream? Indulge your sweet tooth and pick up a few scoops of fresh snow and whisk it with milk, vanilla, sugar, and salt to make a tasty treat that everybody will love. Here’s a link to a recipe if you need it!

Take this time to complete some of those home improvement projects you’ve wanted to get done. Find a project to tackle, make sure you have the right tools, and get to work. It will ease your restless legs and you’ll feel good about knocking something off your “honey do” list. Don’t have anything that needs fixing or improvement? Create something new! Browse the internet for some crafty ideas and you’ll be able to engage your creativity despite the dreary weather. Kids can join in the crafty fun with pre-made craft kits like this one from Charmaz that lets them create their own bracelets. You’ve got some time on your hands, so why not put your hands to use with some handy work?

The scenery is beautiful after a fresh layer of snow falls, so pick up a brush and inspire your artistic side. Try sketching with a regular paper and pad or doodling with glow in the dark ink. Even better - use the snow as your canvas. By mixing food coloring with water you are able to transform the white blankets of snow into a masterpiece! This activity is great for getting the kids active and keeping the mess outside.

Who needs an ice box when you’ve got a good snow day?! You might need to prepare for this activity in advance but it’s easy - just head to Runnings to stock up on your favorite beverages and craft sodas. When the snow just won’t quit, use it to your advantage and chill out those drinks. No need for an ice run when nature’s helping you out. If the snow gets high enough, you might even get the chance to show off your cool new snow-fridge…

What better way to spend your snow day than getting out and embracing the sun on your face and the wind in your hair? Snow was practically made for sledding. Even if you won’t find your pup in the Iditarod anytime soon, they can still get in on the sledding fun, too! Be sure to find the steepest hill around, double check for traffic at the bottom, and enjoy the ride!

Get cozy by the fire, polish up your game strategy and bust out the board games. Snowy weather is the perfect time to engage in a battle of wits with family and friends. Board games are entertaining for both the players and for people watching. There are so many games at Runnings that there will be something for everyone. Simple games like Let’s Go Fishin’ will make even the adults act like grade schoolers again. And though there might only be one winner, there will be lots of fun along the way.

Rev up the engine and take the snowmobile out- this is the weather it was made for! There’s no better way to explore the snowy landscape and terrain than hopping on your snowmobile. Bundle up and take in the crisp winter air. See the world through snow colored goggles. The snow doesn’t have to stop you from finding adventure with your friends! Make sure you have all the right snowmobile accessories to ride safely.

Being snowed in can be a blessing in disguise; it gives you time to hang out with your family, encourages you to catch up on your work or start new projects, and it gives you a reason to act like a kid again- so don’t work too hard! Spring will be here before you know it, so go out and enjoy all that winter has to offer. You’ll be missing the snow soon enough! Find the items you need to transform these ideas into priceless memories at Runnings. In the words of Vaughn Monroe, “Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!”
